Kmart lamps are genuinely impressive for what they cost. At $15-30, they are functional, they look reasonable in a styled photo, and they fill a space without demanding much thought. For a first home, a rental, or a room you are not committed to, they make complete sense.
But there comes a point where you look at your Kmart lamp and realise it is a placeholder rather than a choice. Here is what to think about when you are ready to move on.

Kmart lamps are designed to look good in product photography and acceptable in a range of spaces. They are not designed to last, develop character, or feel like a deliberate decision.
