Overhead lighting is functional. Ambient lighting is transformative. The difference between a room that feels clinical and one that feels genuinely inviting often comes down to how well the ambient light is handled. Here are seven ways to use it well.
1. Layer your light sources
No single light source creates atmosphere on its own. The trick is layering: overhead for function, floor or table lamps for warmth, accent lighting for depth. Aim for at least three light sources in any living space. Read more about this approach in how to choose and place decorative lighting.
2. Go lower
Light positioned at eye level or below feels far more intimate than light coming from above. Table lamps, floor lamps, and low shelf lighting all contribute to that warm, enveloping feeling that makes a room feel lived in.
3. Use warm colour temperatures
Anything below 3000K on the colour temperature scale reads as warm and inviting. Cool daylight bulbs (5000K and above) are great for workspaces but fight against relaxation in living areas and bedrooms. Read our plain English guide to lighting terms for a full explanation.
4. Make light dimmable wherever possible
The ability to dim is not a luxury, it is essential for ambient lighting. A bright lamp at full power and the same lamp at 20% are two entirely different experiences. If your lamp does not dim, consider replacing it.
5. Experiment with coloured light
Coloured light is often dismissed as gimmicky, but used subtly it is remarkably effective. Deep amber creates warmth. Soft red supports sleep and relaxation. Green has proven stress-reducing properties. The Lumo Bloc colour lens system lets you experiment without committing to anything permanently. 6. Light corners and alcoves
Dark corners make rooms feel smaller. A small lamp tucked into a corner or alcove instantly expands the perceived size of a space and adds visual interest.
7. Let the lamp itself be the feature
Ambient lighting does not have to be invisible. A lamp with genuine visual presence, such as a rippled glass block casting light across a wall, becomes part of the room's aesthetic rather than just a functional object. Read more about how to create mood lighting with a glass block lamp.
